Who are we?
Disability Rights Victoria is an advocacy organisation directed by people with disability. We work with and on behalf of adults with a disability.

Our aim is to ensure that all Victorians with disabilities enjoy the same citizenship rights and life opportunities as other members of society.

We advocate in support of your right to:

  • Equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of community life.

  • Access to the accommodation, support services, education, training, transport, recreation and medical treatment you need.

  • A life free from abuse, exploitation and discrimination.

  • The same civil and political rights as any other Australian citizen.

  • Control over the decisions that affect your life.

  • Economic and social security, and a decent standard of living.

  • The consideration of your needs at all stages of economic and social planning.

  • The assistance of a friend, family member or advocate to represent you if you require it.

  • Information about your rights and access to formal complaints systems.

What do we do?

We provide individual advocacy, information and support to people with a disability via our network of advocates located across Victoria. This support may include making representation on behalf of individuals with a disability, helping individuals to advocate for themselves or helping others to advocate for them.

We work to obtain positive results for people with a disability by:

  • Giving individuals information and support.
  • Assisting individuals in various appeal tribunals.
  • Making referrals to appropriate services.
  • Taking issues to government departments, Ministers and the media.

We make representations on behalf of people with a disability to service providers, government and non-government bodies on issues including:

  • Physical access, aids and equipment
  • Transport
  • Home and Community Care Services and other accommodation support
  • Housing
  • Education and training
  • Employment
  • Health

We conduct community education through the media and other public forums on issues affecting people with physical and multiple disability.

We support and resource group advocacy activities which provide long term benefits or enhance outcomes for many people or a group — particularly those most vulnerable to abuse and/or neglect.
