The Victorian Network on Recreation and Disability
(VICNORD) is funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria
and is a statewide information and advocacy network
of people with disabilities, their carers and
advocacy groups in relation to recreation, sport,
physical activity, tourism and the arts.
VICNORD Mission, Vision & Goals

History
VICNORD was established in 1991 by a group of
people with disabilities and their advocacy groups
to lobby for increasing and improving the sport
and recreation opportunities available for Victorians
with disabilities.

Our Role
- To undertake systemic advocacy on issues
where Victorians with disabilities face discrimination
and disadvantage in the areas of recreation,
sport, tourism and the arts.
- To advise and lobby all levels of government
about the barriers and issues that limit participation
by people with disabilities in sport and recreation.
- To promote the rights of people with disabilities
to fully participate in the social and cultural
life of Australian society.
- To support recreation planning and development
that leads to more inclusive communities for
people with disabilities.

How we operate
VICNORD is auspiced by Action for Community Living
(ACL), a Commonwealth funded, and consumer managed
advocacy organisation. Management and administration
support is provided by ACL.
A Management Committee made up of people with disabilities,
one from each metro and rural region within the State
and representatives of organisations involved
in the recreation sector guides the direction
of the organisation. This Management Committee meets 4 times
per year to discuss issues of concern and to set
priorities. Current Management Committee members are:

In conjunction with the Management Committee VICNORD also
encourages the direct participation of people
with disabilities on issues of concern by using
a project development approach. Within this approach,
VICNORD seeks to:
- Recruit interested individuals and groups
to working groups that focus on specific issues.
- Provide training, skill development and build
knowledge of both the issue and good process
for all participants.
- Give those involved an opportunity to participate
from start to finish in an outcome focussed
development that will empower them in other
areas of their community life.

Our Funding
VICNORD receives its core funding from Sport
and Recreation Victoria through an interdepartmental
joint initiative with Department of Human Services.
Additional funding is sought for specific projects
usually one-off project grants.
